A majestic cathedral
The Cathedral of Granada, which has the exact name "the Cathedral of the Incarnation", is located near the Albayzin district in the heart of the historic center. Visiting this religious monument will take us on a journey through time. Don't forget your camera the light inside is gorgeous. First a bit of history. The Cathedral was built on the site of the old mosque by the Catholic kings of Spain after 7 centuries of Muslim domination in this region of Andalusia. King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile in order to "Christianize" the city gave the order in 1501 to build this monument...which will be completely finished 2 centuries later. How to get there. As I told you a little earlier, the Cathedral is located in the old quarter of the city. I advise you to park in the "San Augustin" car park which is the closest. The monument can be visited from Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. and on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. for the sum of 5 euros (free for children under 12)
As soon as one enters the cathedral one is fascinated by these dimensions. This cathedral is one of the largest in Europe. On the floor, an alternating white and black marble tiling gives a very elegant "touch". The white walls give light which allows the colored stained glass windows to flood the interior of the building with sunlight.
Arcades, columns, statues and religious frescoes give a lush side to this Catholic temple
In the middle of the Cathedral you will see a monumental organ. I say one but it's more like two. It was the organ builder Leonardo Fernandez Davila who built the organ on the side of the Gospel from 1744 to 1746 and that of the Epistle from 1746 to 1749. They were restored twice.
You will also discover some rare "pearls", such as this carved wooden piece of furniture
Or these ancient books richly engraved and in perfect condition, but also religious vestments, gold cups, reliquaries... What historical riches!!
I will end with the vision of this magnificent cupola. A Gothic dome on a Renaissance-style building, this technical feat earned recognition at the time of these exceptional architects.
wish you a good trip back in time during your visit. One last tip, it is possible for you to take a guide in order to deepen and better know this place Good visit and good photos.
